Day 2: FEAST of UNLEAVEN BREAD
On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Festival of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. For seven days present a food offering to the Lord. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.’”
Leviticus 23:6-8
Runs for 7 days in the month of Nisan directly following Passover
This is one of the festivals that really showcase the difference between ‘sabbath’ and ‘sabbath’. As we discussed in another post, the word ‘sabbath’ has come to mean ‘Saturday’ or ‘Sunday’ (depending on if you are following Hebrew or Gentile customs)-the day we go to church. But in reality it is a verb, which means it is not a ‘definitive’ day, meaning that it can be ANY day of the week. Here we see that God determined that the first and last day should be held as a ‘sabbath’-a ‘rest day’. So theoretically, if this happened to fall on a Thursday, there could be 3 ‘sabbaths’ in that week. Plus Passover the day before being a ‘sabbath’ we could have as many as 5 ‘sabbath’ days in an 8 day period. That’s a lot of resting!
But the point of the ‘feast of unleaven bread’ directs us back to the actions immediately after the passover of he death angel. God told them to prepare things without leavening. Because leavening is in the scripture often used to signify sin. And sin-like leavening-grows if it isn’t COMPLETELY eradicated. That is where the issue comes in-they were told to get rid of ALL leavening in their household so as not to infect anything else. We are told to get rid of all SIN in our lives for the same reason. If not attacked and removed, it continues to grow. And grow. And grow.
Jesus takes away our sins. He takes away ALL the sin of the world. So it is no wonder that the passover lamb Jesus now takes away the leavening of sin. And now obvious why this feast happens IMMEDIATELY after the passover. For the moment He died, He took our sin.
They first rest, then celebrate and honor Him, then rest again. We have our rest as soon as we let Him take away our sins. We then spend our lives celebrating and honoring Him. And at the end of our lives, we move into our eternal rest with HIm.
John 1:29
Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
