Hebrews 11, The Hall of Faith – Day 1

written by: John Jarboe

Hebrews 11:1–3 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

John Newton wrote in a hymn:

His call we obey,
Like Abra’m of old,
Not knowing our way,
But faith makes us bold;
For though we are strangers,
We have a good guide,
And trust in all dangers,
The Lord will provide.

When Satan appears
To stop up our path,
And fill us with fears,
We triumph by faith:
He cannot take from us,
Though oft he has try’d,
This heart-cheering promise,
The Lord will provide.[1]

Without Faith it is impossible to please God.  As we read through this 11th chapter of Hebrews, let us consider the Faith of those who had less revealed Word than we do and how we can express our Faith.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, like the Apostles who asked Jesus to increase their faith (Luke 17:5,) we pray that you help us in our weakness to understand more fully the Grace and Mercy you have offered us.  In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
