January 2. Creation: A Devotion in 10 days

January 2, 2023
written by: Eric Scites

Introduction: Before Time.

He has made everything beautiful in it’s time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 3:11

Reading: Genesis 1:1-3:24

We start our year thinking about creation, and over the next 8 days we will look at them one day at a time. Some might take an ‘evolutionary’ timeline-millions and millions of years ago-some might take a ‘Young Earth’ idea of anywhere from 7,000-21,000 years ago, some might not even speculate.

For the purpose of this devotion I will take what I can glean from scripture. For at every ‘creation’ event the wording at the end was that ‘the twilight and dawn were one day’. And although the ancient Hebrew had a number of words for ‘day’ each meaning something different from a time to an age, the particular word used in the Genesis narrative everywhere else in scripture translates to a 24 hour period. With the exception of three books every New Testament book refers to Genesis in a literal way. For as Jeremiah will write: ‘Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.’
Jeremiah 32:17

Scripture concepts:

The One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these.
Isaiah 45:7

For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. Colossians 1:16

Prayer: Lord God, we give thanks that You decided to do what You did. And although I do not understand how and why, I ask that you open my eyes to see You for the Creator that You are.
