The poor in spirit.

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus had a LOT to say about the Pharisees. One of these had to do with their pride. They KNEW they were ‘close to God’ and let everyone know. While they read and studied the scripture, what they were lacking was a desire-a strong, burning desire-to fill that feeling of spiritual destitution that sat in their souls. They didn’t even realize that!

Instead, Jesus lets us know that those who have that ache-that burning desire to really KNOW Him-the ones who recognize there is an emptiness that only He can fill-that we will get there. ‘Seek, and you shall find’. The Pharisees were seeking not for the glory of the Lord, but to gain fame and glory for themselves. But someone truly seeking God-who recognizes that they have nothing and long to fill themselves with the true living God-they are the ones who will be ‘supremely blessed’.

Scripture:
Jeremiah 29:13
Luke 11:9
Luke 18:10-12

Prayer: Fill me, Lord, with the knowledge of You. I recognize the need that only comes FROM You. Help me to recognize You as the wellspring of life that can fill my soul completely. Guide me to Your path and Your ways and allow me to be a part of bringing glory not to myself, but to Your kingdom!
