January 6. Creation: A Devotion in 10 days

Day 3-Genesis 1: 9-13 Land and vegetation
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-3

Reading: The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.
Isaiah 40:8

There are, by my count 390,900 plant species known to man. Well, not by my count but from what I can find out through research on what serious botanist tell me. In addition, about 369,000 (or 94%) are of the ‘flowering’ variety. And these are only the ones Science have ‘classified’. Nor does it take into account all of the different ‘subspecies’.

But God wasn’t satisfied. His creative nature wasn’t satisfied. For instance, there are 14 different ‘types’ of beets and over 200 of potatoes. I can recognize one type of beet-pickled and only the three major potato: roasted, loaded and mashed. To think that in ONE day God not only created all of them, He created all of the trees, bushes, grass, fruits, vegetables, seaweed, kelps, algae and whatever. Even more He put in their DNA and cell structures the ability to grow into different ‘subspecies’, including the aforementioned amount of different beet and potato.

This is something to think about. It’s not enough to say ‘God created the plants’, He did so much more. He designed them in such a way as to be useful, to flourish, to multiply. Nothing wasted in the creation equation.

When considering the vast message each scripture teaches us, Charles Spurgeon, the great 19th century theologian compares this, God’s word, to the other aspect of God’s creative work: “No Scripture is exhausted by a single explanation. The flowers of God’s garden bloom not only double, but sevenfold; they are continually pouring forth fresh fragrance.”

And all that to think about and we didn’t even touch on the separation of the sea from the land, which happened on this day, as well! We cannot hope to see all of God’s creative genius but what we can see is well worth a moment of considering.

Scriptural Concepts:
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.
Isaiah 40:8

Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are…
Luke 12:27

Prayer:

  1. I am in complete awe of His creation and His power and design of it. I can only imagine what it may have looked like before sin entered in. I’m sure we we be awestruck beyond belief when we see the new heaven and new earth after the millennial reign of Christ here on earth.
